Closing up Transom Opening Job

Here is another job I did for a customer who wanted the opening in his transom closed up. Another company put an aluminum plate over the opening and it didn’t look great. The customer that owned the boat complained to the company that he didn’t liked the way the aluminum plate looked like on the transom with big bolts going thru it to hold it on. So the company got in touch with me to see if I could close it up and make it look like new.  The owner wanted it to look like it just came out of the factory.

For this type of repair I’ve seen other repair people cut plywood out to the opening size and fiberglass that in place. I have seen many repairs done this way and sure enough after a few months, the fiberglass starts to crack around the opening and soon the plywood insert starts to float around the opening, which leads to the boat taking on water. I’ve seen this done to Grady White and many other manufacturers boats. This is not the correct and safe way to do the repair. The boat can sink if it's done that way.

Go thru the photos and see how it’s done the right way. The customer was very happy with the job. He was coming down every other day to see the job in progress. And each time he was more impressed with my work.
